When you have broken a tooth following an injury, or if you have sudden pain in your smile, this could mean you’re suffering from an issue that needs immediate attention. With emergency dentistry, your Des Moines, IA, dentist can see you outside of normal business hours to help repair your smile. In today’s blog, we talk about emergency care and offer tips to ease discomfort following your injury.
Don’t Ignore an Emergency
Often, dental emergencies include issues like chipped or cracked teeth, or missing/loose crowns or fillings. Unexplained discomfort, such as sensitive teeth and toothaches, could also be an issue that needs attention. We urge people to seek care right away, as damaged teeth or compromised restorations could expose sensitive tissues and lead to painful cases of tooth decay or dental infection. Likewise, persistent pain or sensitivity itself could mean you have a serious cavity or infection that could eventually threaten the stability of your tooth unless addressed. Remember, when you call, we will set up a time to see you quickly, even if you issue happens outside of normal business hours.
Easing Your Discomfort
If you have a chipped or cracked tooth, then rinse with warm water and use a piece of gauze or a cloth to stem any bleeding. If you can recover any pieces of your tooth, bring them with you in a sealed container. A cold compress or ice could against the side of the face could reduce swelling.
If you have a compromised or missing restoration, then try to avoid sugary foods or drinks, or items with a high or low temperature, as the exposed tooth will be very sensitive. If you have a toothache, then rinse with warm water and gently floss on either side of the tooth. If this fails to address the issue, the let us know soon.
If a tooth is knocked out completely, then pick it up the crown only, never touch the roots, and place it into a glass of milk or salt water. If this is impossible, then gently insert it back into the socket and bite down gently to hold in place. Come see us right away.
For all of these issues, you can also take an over-the-counter medication to ease discomfort too.
