Do you have unsightly yellow and brown stains on your teeth? If so, this could cause embarrassment and impact your comfort during social situations. Fortunately, we can help with cosmetic dentistry. Our professional teeth whitening treatment targets and removes stains, offering patients in Des Moines, IA, a smile brightened by several shades.
The Initial Office Visits
The first step involves a visit to our office. We will examine your smile to assess the cause and severity of your discoloration. If you have stains forming below the enamel, known as intrinsic stains, we may suggest masking them with bonding or veneers. However, for surface stains, known as extrinsic discoloration, we may suggest our professional whitening option. We start with an initial office visit. In which we apply a bleaching gel to the teeth and activate the bleaching ingredients with a light. Next, we create a set of custom plastic trays, and send you home with these trays and a bleaching gel!
At home, you will fill the trays with gel and wear them for about 30 to 45 minutes a day. The trays help ensure even results, and prevent saliva from diluting the bleaching ingredients. After a week to ten days, your teeth could be brightened by several shades. The system is designed to help limit tooth sensitivity and provide more dramatic and longer-lasting results than can be achieved with store-bought alternatives. You can keep the trays and any leftover gel for touchups in the coming months.
Keeping Your Teeth Bright
Following treatment, you can take steps to help prevent serious discoloration. For example, brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes, and flossing every night, removes food particles that could otherwise be broken down. This process would cause plaque buildup, which not only makes stains more visible, but increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Cutting back on the sugary foods and drinks that feed bacteria is also helpful! We suggest a visit every six months so we can clean your teeth too, which allows us to keep smiles bright by removing plaque buildup. Try to avoid smoking or using other tobacco products too. If you have any questions about keeping your teeth bright, or about our professional teeth whitening systems, then please contact our team. We want to help you enjoy a brighter and more attractive smile, and also monitor and improve your overall oral health too!
