Just because you have an uneven smile doesn’t mean you need metal orthodontics. Instead, we can help our Des Moines, IA, patients enjoy a straighter smile with clear Invisalign® braces. How does this system work and what benefits will Invisalign® offer over metal braces?
How Does Invisalign® Work?
With traditional orthodontics, we apply metal brackets to the teeth and connect them with an arch wire. Adjusting tension then repositions the teeth over a period of 18 months to 2 years. However, with Invisalign® we instead take detailed impressions of your smile, which will be sent to an Invisalign® lab, where experts will create the aligners. Patients then wear a set for between 20 and 22 hours daily. Around every two weeks, they move on to the next set. Over the period of a year (or up to 18 months for teens) most patients enjoy a significantly straighter smile.
The Benefits of Clear Braces
First, the aligners will be clear and practically invisible when worn, making this a preferred choice for adults. You can remove them before you eat so you don’t need to avoid any hard or sticky foods as you would if you wore braces. Brushing and flossing is also much easier with removable braces. Finally, you enjoy fewer office visits and a shorter treatment time.
Long Term Benefits of Correcting Uneven Smiles
When you fix your uneven smile, you no longer have places in your smile for food particles to become trapped. Patients then enjoy a reduced risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Misalignment also places pressure on the jaw joints, so orthodontic treatment helps decrease the chances of TMJ disorder and bruxism from developing.
