Everywhere you go, you see celebrities on billboards and magazines with pearly white smiles, and most would assume that’s the normal way teeth should look; however, not everyone may be aware of how to obtain a shiny white smile of their own. This is no longer an issue as your smile can be repaired to look brand new through teeth whitening. Teeth whitening is a procedure used to lighten teeth, remove stains, and discoloration. In today’s society, as your teeth are one of the first things notice during a first impression. With teeth whitening, your teeth can obtain a healthy appearance that will leave a lasting impression.
Why do Teeth Change Color?
There are many reasons why teeth experience a change in color, and may also be the result of different factors. For instance, if the outside layer of your teeth, or enamel, becomes stained, it is known as extrinsic staining as the outside, or exterior of your tooth is affected. This is typically due to consuming foods or drinks with rich dyes and colors, such as wine, coffee, juices, etc. If the inside, or interior of a tooth becomes discolored, this is known as intrinsic discoloration and is typically a sign of infection and is not treatable through teeth whitening.
Treatment for Tooth Discoloration
Before a visit to the dentist is scheduled, you are able to prevent tooth stains from occurring on your own. For instance, a common way to avoid stains is through proper dental care at home. This is accomplished through regular brushing and flossing, along with routine dental checkups and cleanings to remove food particles that cling to the enamel and lead to staining. Along with keeping your teeth ready for a photoshoot, preventive care at home will remove bacteria that can lead to infection and issues that are not treatable through at home dental care, or a standard teeth whitening procedure. If the inside of your tooth experiences discoloration, it is not treatable through standard teeth whitening and will require further treatment.
