How Dental Implants Improve Your Smile

How Dental Implants Improve Your SmileIn the best of all worlds, we’d all have beautiful teeth, and they would stay with us throughout our life.  But life isn’t always that way. Your smile can change over time. Teeth can be lost through accidents, tooth decay or planned removal.  However a gap comes about, it is important to replace a missing tooth.  Placing a dental implant will restore comfort, chewing ability and attractiveness to your smile.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post that is surgically placed in the bone of the jaw.  Once the implant and bone are fully integrated (a process that may take several months) we will fit a custom-made crown onto the implant, to restore your natural smile.  Several implants can also be placed to hold a series of prosthetic teeth (called a bridge) or implants can hold a partial denture securely in place.

The Functional Side of an Implant

When a tooth is removed, there will be a gap to fill.  Even if the gap doesn’t show in your smile, the adjacent teeth will begin to shift into the empty space.  Gaps can cause a disturbance in your ability to comfortably eat, as well as the ability to speak clearly, and if there are several missing teeth it can even change the natural shape of the face.  Placing an implant in the gap will short circuit these changes.

The Beautiful Side of an Implant

While the implant post itself will be hidden, a precisely fitted crown will be on view.  Most likely no one will be able to tell it is not an original tooth (or teeth!)  You can speak, sing, chew and smile just as you always have.  (And don’t forget to give the implant the same brushing, flossing and care you give your natural teeth.)

Is an Implant is Right for Me?

If you have a point of concern, please bring it up at an office consultation, or any other appointment. It may be that our office will bring up the need for an implant, as we discuss care and treatment for your teeth.  We can arrange any necessary appointments to place the implant, and we will work carefully with you to make a timeline to craft and fit the crown, bridge or other prosthetic, once the implant is firmly in place.
