About 12 to 20 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, a disorder that interrupts healthy sleeping patterns. During obstructive sleep apnea, the soft tissues in your mouth block your airways. As you briefly stop breathing, you will likely wake up choking or gasping for air. These disruptions can lead to daytime sleepiness, high blood pressure, depression, irritability, heart attack, and other health conditions. Fortunately, Dr. Burds can treat sleep apnea so you can receive the quality sleep you need.
Sleep Apnea Evaluation
During your appointment with Dr. Burds, your Des Moines dentist may perform a sleep study. General sleep studies assess your sleeping behaviors, including your breathing rate, brain activity, and body functioning during sleep. After your evaluation, Dr. Burds will be able to provide an accurate diagnosis and treatment to correct your sleep disorder.
Sleep Apnea Treatment Options
Dr. Burds will work with your situation to create a personalized treatment plan for your sleep disorders.
- The most common sleep apnea treatment is using a continuous positive airway pressure machine, or CPAP. During this treatment, you will wear a mask over your mouth or nose. A generator is attached to a tube—which is attached to the mask— and blows air through the tube and into your nose and throat. The mask helps keep your airway open so you can breathe freely.
- If you don’t feel comfortable wearing a mask, or if the CPAP treatment simply doesn’t work well for you, Dr. Burds may recommend a night guard. This oral device keeps your soft tissues in their proper places to prevent blocking your airway while you sleep. Oral appliances can also pull your jaw forward and reposition your tongue to help open up your airway.
- Dr. Burds may also be able to treat your sleep apnea by recommending some behavior changes. Sleeping on your back, drinking alcohol before bedtime, and obesity can all increase your risk of snoring and sleep apnea. Changing your nighttime rituals can help you sleep more comfortably.
